Our Story

Maunsell’s Bar, Restaurant and Service station is situated on Portarlington Road, on the outskirts of Tullamore town and on the main artery of many national road routes (roundabout crossing N52 & R420).

The perfect spot to eat, drink or refuel!

With its popular and informal, child-friendly environment, Maunsell’s is a wonderful spot to take the whole family for a fantastic pub lunch or evening meal. We also have a recently renovated outdoor area for customers to enjoy during the warmer months.

The Kitchen

Our kitchen is open seven days per week and in addition to the unrivalled daily carvery, our extensive menu also includes firm favourites such as hearty, traditional roasts and homemade beef burgers, vegetarian and healthy options or your own choice from a range of daily specials.

The Bar

The bar has been a popular spot with locals for over twenty-five years and has also become a firm favourite with people who are just passing through, looking for a pit-stop to fulfil both their fuel and food requirements, all under one roof.  Our on-site off-licence is also well-stocked with a wide range of beers, ciders, wines and spirits for all your home entertaining needs.

The Beginning…

The site upon which Maunsell’s now operates was originally purchased in 1974 by Tullamore native Jimmy Carter who at this time built a pub, filling-station and a private house. Given the fact that James Earl or “Jimmy” Carter, Jr. (born October 1, 1924) was serving as the 39th President of the United States during this same period, the Tullamore pub became appropriately known as ‘The White House’ and this is the name by which many customers still refer to the establishment today.

From The White House to Maunsell’s

The premises was taken over in 1978 by Paddy Gavigan, during an era of Irish and Traditional music and ‘The White House’ attracted huge crowds who came to enjoy well known bands and blaring traditional Irish music sessions over a few pints. Future owners included other locals, Gussie Lambe and subsequently Eamonn Flanagan before the bar was purchased by Sean Maunsell in 1999 following his retirement from Killeshal Concrete. Shortly afterwards, the off-licence and dining offering were born.

Whether you are just stopping off quickly to grab a bite to eat, meeting friends or planning a more intimate evening, a warm welcome and a great selection of beers, spirits, and wines from around the world await you. With its timeless, old-world charm, Maunsell’s offers traditional hospitality and a homely atmosphere blended with style and comfort.
